The ONLY Victoria Cross awarded on D Day: 6 June 1944 was earned by a Green Howards soldier, Company Sergeant Major, Stan Hollis.

Almost 2000 men from the regiment experienced setting foot on French soil for the first time since the defeat at Dunkirk four years previously. The tide had turned.

It was more than one day. It was more than one man.

Our D Day exhibition introduces you to the soldiers who came from the sea, and those who fell from the sky. The men who didn't even make it as far as the beach, the ones who got captured, those still fighting on more than a year later, and those who can tell us directly what it was like.

You will see Stan Hollis' VC on display in our Medal Room as part of the exhibition.

Snippets of Time is an exhibition of women determined to find moments for creativity and expression through colour

Snippets of Time is a collaboration between 3 artists; Isobel Rooke, Christine Hughes and Hannah Turlington, whose identities as artists coexist with that of being a mother.

The exhibition explores the push and pull between motherhood and being an artist. Each artist has their own distinctive style and essence to their work but they are united by their determination to be the artist they were born to be.

Exploration and experimentation play a significant part of their processes, which have led to this body of work which you see exhibited.

A futuristic take on an old classic!

Originally set in the last third of the 19th Century, Richmond Operatic are delighted to warp the classic G & S Operetta, HMS Pinafore forward some 500 years, setting it aboard an intergalactic Starship!

It tells a comedic tale of love, honour and duty. Josephine, the committed daughter of the Starship's Commander, Captain Corcoran, falls for lowly Specialist 2nd Class, Ralph (Raif) Rackstraw. However, her emotional turmoil is fuelled by her true love for Ralph, set against obeying her father, whose greatest desire seems to be his arrangement of a marriage to the venerable High Counsel of the fleet, Joseph Porter.

Love, honour, duty and a spaceship, what more could you want from a musical?!

21 May - 25 May
Venue: Georgian Theatre Royal
Time: 19.30

HMS (or USS) Pinafore takes this Gilbert and Sullivan classic far forward in time and Space, whilst maintaining the customary traits of mistaken identity, class warfare, quirky characters and lyrical tongue twisters aplenty in this intergalactic caper.

Aboard the United Space Ship (USS) Pinafore, we find two star-crossed lovers, whose affection is blighted by age-old prejudices surrounding class divide. Ralph is a lowly specialist aboard the ship and Josephine is none other than his Captain's daughter, but she is promised in marriage to the politically appointed head of the Federation star fleet, the flamboyant High Counsel Joseph Porter.

As the lovers lament their predicament and plan their escape, a surprise disclosure from an unlikely quarter show that not all is as it seems.

The different fabrics and wools intrigue and inspire her to explore what can be created, manipulating different shapes and forms. Wool as a material helps with the freedom to experiment, without it becoming permanent or unfixable.

In June 1943 the 10th Battalion of the Green Howards became the 12th (Yorkshire) Parachute Regiment.

A year later, they dropped into Normandy on D-Day and were given the job of taking and holding the village of Ranville, in support of the famous attack on Pegasus Bridge.

They also went on to fight during the last desperate German offensive in the Battle of the Bulge in December 1944.

This Museum Talk explores both of these relatively unheralded actions, and confirms the adaptability, tenacity and fighting ability of the Yorkshiremen who came from the sky and who fought from Normandy to the Baltic.
